SCHOOL PROFILE AND HISTORY

When the capital of the Punjab moved from Shimla to Chandigarh, the Government started the Model School on 13th October, 1953 to provide facilities for the all round development of the children. This is a co-educational school, preparing boys and girls for the all India Secondary School Examination and Senior Secondary School Examination. Two nursery schools are attached to this school. Children of 3+ years seek admission to Pre-Nursery and 4+ to Nursery class. The medium of instructions is English.

The school offers science (Medical and Non Medical ), commerce, Vocational IT to students up to 12th level and is one of the biggest senior secondary schools of the city. The school is fortunate in having a team of devoted and academically qualified teaching faculty who take teaching as a mission. In addition to this is ‘The guiding light of the school’ its new incumbent Ms. Promila kumari Sharma who joined the institution as Principal in Oct,2009 but has already earned the sobriquet of women with a mission who with her perseverance, hard work and moral uprightness is determined to make the school a temple of learning in the true sense.

The school has on its staff a qualified doctor and a dispenser who in addition to their daily duties, examine boys and girls twice a year. A copy of Medical Examination report is sent to the parents for information. The school has well equipped sick room. Minor ailments are attended to by the doctor in which cases the expenditure incurred will have to be met by the parents. Students suffering from serious ailments are referred to the Govt. Hospital Sector-16, Chandigarh. Parents are requested no to send to school, children suffering from contagious or infectious diseases.

The whole school is divided into four houses namely Venus, Mercury, Earth and Sun. Healthy competitions in academics, sports, social and other fields are held on house basis. Each house elects councilor to the school. The duties of conducting morning assembly, school functions, school tuck-shop, are religiously discharged by the students through their house Captains and other executives. Every week one house is on duty and through its different squads and is responsible for the efficient conduct on morning assembly with its own prayer song, school cleanliness, Children Park, play-fields etc.

The school brings out annually a magazine. It provides opportunity to the students to express themselves in the language they prefer to write in. the magazine contains the school news and presents before the parents a picture of School activities.

There is a very good library in the school containing about 13003 books of reputed authors of English, Hindi and Punjabi. The library is under the charge of a whole time librarian. The school contributes to as many as magazines and journals catering to the varied interests of all the children. Books are issued to all students regularly. To acquaint the students with general information and current affairs special efforts have been made in setting up an information corner in the library room, Charts, Maps and models on current affairs, history, geography, nature study, language and art are displayed in planned manner.

The school is also a cluster head of S.S.A(Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan) and continuously strives to provide better facilities, training and skills through regular teacher orientation programs top uplift the standard of instruction. Along with academic excellence the school also tries to provide a platform for extracurricular activities through the house system. The school has been divided into four houses Venus, Mercury, earth and Sun. Different competitions are also held from time to time to give exposure to the students.
